Want to know how to guide a client out of a freeze state?

Updated: Nov 15

This video is a fantastic natural illustration of how the body comes out of a freeze state by completing an interrupted defensive response. In this case it is an induced freeze (the tranquilliser) following a flight response (the defensive response of attempting to escape.) When the tranquilliser wears off, you can see the completion of the flight response in the twitching of the legs and the body settling the nervous system through deep regulatory breaths. This is how wild animals naturally process a traumatic event.

You can successfully guide a client out of a freeze state by recognising the signs and by helping them to complete the response that the body was unable to complete at the time of the trauma. Learn how to do do this through our L5 certificate: Working Somatically with Trauma in Counselling Practice.
