Working Somatically with Trauma in Therapeutic Practice
"This is the missing piece. After years as a therapist, this is what brings it all together." (Graduate feedback)
Set Yourself Apart
Welcome to the next natural step for counsellors ready to meet the body where trauma, and healing, actually happens. Most counselling training stops short of equipping practitioners to work effectively with trauma — despite research showing that 94% of people entering therapy have experienced at least one traumatic event.
Our CPCAB accredited somatic training adds the depth, confidence, and clinical edge your practice needs to thrive, especially in an increasingly crowded field where clients find that talking alone often isn’t enough.
ABOUT THE COURSE
At times in therapy, we can notice something change that cannot be reached through words alone. A client goes quiet, becomes agitated, loses focus, or feels suddenly overwhelmed. These are not simply thoughts or emotions, they are shifts in the nervous system, and without a clear way of understanding or responding to that shift, the work can begin to lose its direction.
The Centre for Somatic Resilience Training facilitates CPCAB-accredited training in working somatically with trauma, grounded in a clear and practical understanding of nervous system protective responses and regulation. The training is organised through the StateShift® model, a new and practical framework for recognising and working with moment-to-moment changes in nervous system states.
We now know that the biological systems activated by trauma are the same ones involved in everyday experiences of anxiety, depression, stress, and relational conflict. That same system is also the gateway to joy, ease and connection, making a somatic approach not just useful, but essential for the effectiveness of your work, the wellbeing of your clients, and the sustainability of your practice.
In a competitive field where many are worried about finding work, being able to offer a true integration of trauma-attuned, body-focused therapy sets you apart. It’s a vital next step, a clinical deepening, and a future-proofing of your practice all in one.

Interest in somatic therapy has grown significantly in recent years, as both clients and practitioners recognise the limitations of approaches that rely solely on cognitive understanding. This training reflects a model of working with trauma that recognises the ongoing relationship between mind and body, and the importance of both understanding and lived experience. Healing involves not only making sense of what has happened, but supporting the restoration of an embodied sense of safety and connection to ourselves, and to others.
The StateShift® Model and the in depth practical training in this course provides therapists with a clear structure for tracking a client’s real-time experience, informing clinical decision-making, and applying somatic interventions in a way that is safe and effective. Whether you're newly qualified or approaching the end of your Level 4 diploma, the next step matters. This Level 5 Certificate fills the gap that is left by most counselling training, equipping you to effectively and safely respond to the nervous system shifts that shape what actually happens in the room. It supports practitioners in reconnecting to their own felt sense, not just as a technique, but as a way of being, and equips them to track, read and respond to the nervous systems of their clients with clarity and care.
Our training is built on contemporary, recognised neuroscience, rooted in ethical clinical practice, and delivered in small groups of 15 where learning is relational, practical, and human.
